Attributes of Wool
Wool is a 100% natural fibre: Grown by sheep and it provides many natural attributes that are healthy for both human and environment.
Wool is Biodegradable : Once wool has served its product purpose, it will naturally biodegrade in the soil or in our marine environment without harming any other life cycle surrounding it. In fact, it provides a natural fertiliser to the soil or seabed.
Wool is Sustainable: Wool is a protein fibre grown by sheep. It grows naturally with good food intake, fresh air, sunshine and clean water. New Zealand provides a free-range environment where sheep are nurtured and taken care of but are free to roam in the clean New Zealand countryside.
Wool is Non-Toxic: Wool being a natural fibre does not excrete any toxic gases or
any harmful micro-fibres. Unlike man-made fibres, wool is not harmful to the human
food chain.
Wool is a natural temperature regulator or thermostat: Due to the natural crimp of a
wool fibre, Wool has the ability to trap warm air within the fibres keeping you warmer
in low temperatures and the ability to release hot air and moisture in hotter conditions
keeping your body temperature constant. Absolutely ideal for clothing, bedding and
home interiors.
Wool is a natural fire retardant: Wool will ignite only after reaching temperatures of
around 570- 600 C. Due to the ability to hold moisture and the structure of this protein
fibre. Wool will self-extinguish below these temperatures. Wool does not melt
therefore will not drip and spread heat and flame.
Wool is a natural air purifier: Wool is non-allergenic, it absorbs and stores toxic
gases, mildew, mould and will trap any air born allergens. There are significant health
benefits using wool products if you suffer from respiratory issues. VOC (Volatile
organic Compounds) gases that are released from the disintegration of glues,
laminates, paint, products made from petrol-chemical’s(synthetic home interiors) are
all absorbed and stored by wool fibres reducing the volume in the air you breath in.
Wool is a natural absorber of odours and smells: Wool will absorb sweat and odour
giving you peace of mind when wearing wool clothing. Wool also absorbs any odours
from your pets which also reduces the smell of your animals inside your house and
their wool bedding still stays clean and odour free.
Wool is a natural sound barrier: Wool fibre absorbs sound waves. This makes wool
very valuable as a natural acoustic barrier with many valuable applications from
residential, commercial, and industrial uses.
Wool is a natural moisture manager: Wool can absorb up to 30% of its weight in moisture
without feeling damp. When wool absorbs moisture, it produces heat, so if you go from a warm
room into a cold, damp night wearing a wool jersey, the wool picks up water vapour from the air,
keeping you warm. The reverse occurs when you go back into the warm room – the moisture in your
jersey passes into the atmosphere, cooling you down. Tiny pores in the cuticle cells allow water
vapour to pass through the wool fibre. This makes wool products like clothing, bedding, home
interiors so valuable especially in high humidity and high condensation conditions as it will absorb
the excess moisture.
Wool is safe: The natural properties of wool make wool very safe for babies as well as your pets.
Wool has a natural softness along with providing a natural warmth which allows for a safe night
sleep for babies and grown ups.
Wool is resilient: Wool fibre has very good tensile strength. This makes wool very long lasting.
Due to the crimp of a wool fibre, this also creates springiness which gives any product the ability to
retain its shape and form.
Wool is renewable: Wool is grown from a sheep. Every so often, the sheep are shorn to release
the fleece of wool. This is a very humane action that does not hurt the sheep in this process. This
allows the sheep to roam further, gain weight and improves the ability of the new-born lamb to
suckle.
